THE BAUHAUS ETHOS

From Bauhaus to Bespoke: Why My Goldsmithing Embraces a Century-Old Philosophy

When I sit down at my bench each morning, I’m not just thinking about making something "pretty." I’m thinking about the weight of the metal, the integrity of the join, and the story the piece needs to tell. Lately, I’ve been reflecting on why I feel such a deep connection to the Bauhaus movement—that radical German school of design that, over a hundred years ago, decided art and industry should finally shake hands.

People often think of Bauhaus as cold or industrial, but to me, it’s the ultimate expression of respect for the craft. Here is how those century-old principles guide everything I create at Deana Baker Jewellery.

More Than a Designer: The Unity of Craft

At the heart of the Bauhaus was a simple, revolutionary idea: there should be no wall between the "artist" and the "craftswomen."

In my world, I wear both hats. I don’t just sketch a pretty ring and send it off to a factory; I am a Designer and a Goldsmith. To me, you cannot truly design a piece unless you understand how the gold flows under the torch or how the saw blade feels against the silver. Being the "Maker" means my hands understand the limits and the possibilities of the material as much as my mind does. That unity is where the magic happens.

Honesty in Every Grain

One of the most famous Bauhaus mantras was "Truth to Materials." It means letting a material be exactly what it is, rather than trying to trick the eye.

I’ve always been drawn to the raw, honest beauty of precious metals. It’s why you’ll see so many satin finishes and brushed textures in my work. I love the way a soft, matte finish shows the true "soul" of the gold. I don’t want to hide the metal under layers of fuss; I want to celebrate its strength, its luster, and its permanence.

Form Following Function (and Emotion)

We’ve all heard the phrase "form follows function," but in bespoke jewellery, function is deeply personal.

A piece of jewellery that sits in a box because it’s "too delicate" or "too old-fashioned" has lost its function. This is why I am so passionate about remodelling. When I take a client's sentimental gold—perhaps an heirloom that no longer fits their life—and transform it into a sleek, contemporary bangle, I am restoring its "function." I’m making it wearable again. In my workshop, design serves the person, ensuring that memories aren’t just stored, but lived in every day.

The Power of the Line

If you look at my designs, you’ll see a love for geometric clarity. Whether it’s the clean stack of a set of rings or the bold, architectural curve of a pendant, I find a sense of peace in simple, strong lines.

Bauhaus taught us that you don't need "extra" to make an impact. By stripping away the unnecessary, we allow the craftsmanship and the quality of the stone to speak for themselves. It’s a minimalist approach that feels both incredibly modern and completely timeless.

"The artist is an exalted craftsman." — Walter Gropius

Every time I pick up my files or light my torch, I feel like I’m carrying that torch forward. It’s about making things that work, things that last, and things that honor the materials of our earth.

Request a consultation

Due to the time and care each piece requires — and the popularity of remodelling — I offer client consultations by advance appointment. This ensures I can give each of my clients the attention they deserve. Please request a consultation below, and I’ll email you to confirm the next steps.

“It was a hard decision for me to make about using Mum's jewellery, but I have to say it was the best decision I've made in a long time. You are so talented and made the process so easy, I love the rings and think of her every time I look at them"
